Swim with Humpback Whales in Vava’u, Tonga

Experience the extraordinary opportunity to swim with humpback whales in the clear blue waters of Vava’u, Tonga. Surrounded by coral reefs and palm-fringed islands, this tropical setting welcomes humpbacks during their annual breeding season, when they gather to mate, give birth and nurture their calves.

 Accommodation and Boat

Enjoy seven nights’ twin-share accommodation in a picturesque private waterfront villa overlooking Neiafu Harbour, just minutes from the restaurants and shops of Neiafu village. Our boat collects you from the dock on your doorstep each tour morning - the perfect base for your swim-with-whales adventure in Tonga.

The house features air conditioning and ceiling fans.

There are four bedrooms with King-bed or twin-share configurations, two bathrooms with laundry facilities and an expansive deck area where you can relax and take in the harbour views.

Kitchen facilities include a fridge, cooktop, kettle and toaster for preparing breakfast and snacks, plus a barbecue on the verandah.

Accommodation is self-catering, with meals ashore at your own expense. Lunch, drinks and snacks are provided aboard the boat on whale-swimming days.

With snorkelling on your doorstep and our boat waiting at the dock just down the stairs, getting out on the water couldn’t be easier.

Small Groups and Respectful Whale Encounters

We welcome just six guests per tour, keeping the experience personal and relaxed. With fewer guests rotating through swims, you’ll have more opportunities for time in the water with the whales, whenever their behaviour and conditions allow.

We follow Tonga’s whale-swimming rules, with no more than four guests accompanied by a qualified guide in the water at a time.

The whales’ behaviour and sea conditions determine whether a swim can take place. Our team carefully assesses each encounter, giving the whales space and avoiding pressure to interact. Every day is different, and sightings and swims cannot be guaranteed.

A Spacious Boat for Full Days on the Water

Discover Vava’u aboard our 10-metre flybridge powercat, with space to relax between whale encounters. The upstairs flybridge offers elevated views of the action, while the enclosed cabin provides shelter from wind and weather. A walk-in toilet adds comfort and convenience throughout the day.

Our vessel is Tongan-owned and operated, so your whale-swimming adventure directly supports local people and their livelihoods.

Water Temperature and What to Bring

During the July–October whale season, expect tropical conditions, with cooler days and occasional trade winds. A 3 mm wetsuit is a useful choice for repeated swims, while a windproof jacket or warm layer will help keep you comfortable between encounters.

Bring your swimwear, wetsuit, mask and fins. towel, sun protection and a sense of adventure.

Do I need diving experience?

No scuba diving or freediving experience is required. Our whale swims are snorkelling experiences, so you’ll need to be a confident swimmer, comfortable in open water and able to breathe through a snorkel. Our experienced team will explain the process and guide you throughout your time in the water.

Humpback Whales migrate from their feeding grounds in Antarctica to the warm waters of Tonga to mate and give birth. They begin to arrive in June/July and calves are born between July and September. As well as having calves, single male Whales compete for the attention of a female, listen to the trumpet blows and witness the mighty displays of breaching, spy hopping, tail slapping and pectoral fin in the battle to mate for the following season. Put your head underwater and hear, see and feel the song of the male humpback whale as he fills the ocean with notes, clicks, grunts and whistles to attract a female and warn off smaller males.

Mothers and calves are the best encounters, with the mother lying at about 10 metres, often sleeping with one eye closed for up to 20 minutes with the calf surfacing every 3 to 5 minutes and playing on the surface. The calves are very inquisitive and will approach swimmers so you are able to eyeball each other.Often there is a male escort with the mother and calf. The female has come back into season even though she is lactating and it is possible for her to mate.
